Repurposing grandma's afghan

Howdy ho. First off, a fair warning: this post isn't really totally about knitting so if there is another community I should join and post this question to, please let me know!

A friend of mine has an old crocheted afghan that her grandmother made many years ago. It's one of those comfy and lovable yet incredibly ugly afghans. My friend is wondering if I could repurpose it for her as a pair of mittens for her 18-month old son. I would love to do this but I have no idea how one would go about doing so, so I thought I'd ask you all! Do I cut it up and re-sew it? How do I sew it so that the yarn doesn't fall out? How do I felt it? I am completely miffled by this.

Also, it's an afghan, of course, so one pair of mittens is not going to use up the whole blanket. So I thought it might be fun to also re-purpose it as a tote bag - like this one http://www.modcloth.com/shop/handbags/primrose-patch-bag Again, not quite sure how to do this.

Thank you for any advice!
