I have a pattern for an adult male skull cap, on regular needles. It says 21inches wide (which is fine) but then says to knit for 9inches before decreasing over 12 rows (approx 2inches more). That would make the total 11inches in height, which on my head - forehead to crown is only roughly 6inches.

Am I having a bad day, or is this not right?

It sounds like they're including a fold-up brim. I made a hat for my brother with about the same dimensions.

So if I knock off a few inches I should be OK?

I wasn't sure if it was a brim, or if males just have much larger heads and I've never noticed. (I've never done any type of headwear for a man before..)

Wow I need sleep.

Yes. I would look at another pattern that does not have a brim to get general dimensions if you're not sure how much to skip. Or, somehow arrange to measure the guy's head?

Could be a brim, but also, hats normally sit a little lower than the forehead, even beanies.

Good luck!

I'd say you mean 21 inches in circumference (around your head rather than across it). :-)

I'm working in the flat, so circumference is width in this case

That's odd because 21" is a fairly standard head measurement. Is it seemed together afterwards? Do you have a link to the pattern?

Yes, seamed at the end... I don't have a link handy (I'm on an android tablet so searching is hard ATM) but it was in the comments of one of the posts in this community.

Ah. The measurements given are probably OK then! If you gave me the name of the pattern I could search for it. :-)

(And I did mean "seamed", dammit!)

Lol

I just wasn't sure if it was a brim or not.. there was no pic, just text.
And without a male around ATM, I couldn't check their measurements :-)

Is it the usual kippah that sits close to the head, or a Bokharan-style kufi? They have flattish tops and vertical sides (like a low fezz) so maybe that accounts for the measurements.

Anyway, good luck! I'm sure it'll work out fine!

I always feel a tad stupid when I see things like 'Bokharan-style kufi' and 'kippah' and think 'what in the who?'

I wonder if I've been living under a rock, or if I'm just not expected to know everything about everything.

Recently, someone gave out the name of a particular shoe which was widely known but I had never heard of them. Turns out, if I was a hipster, I totally would have known those shoes. I would have had at least one pair if I wanted to be identified easily as a hipster. I could never be admitted to that club because I will never own skinny jeans.

I realize that this comment has nothing to do with knitting and is not helpful in any way to anyone.

Carry on...

Like when I first moved to North Carolina and someone said they were knitting a tobaggan... I'm like wtf - knitting a sled? Turns out it's common language for a knitted cap in these parts. Not exactly slang - but definitely a localism to this Ohio girl.

It's not necessarily a kippah. "Skullcap" also is used to refer to beanies and suchlike.

OP, when I have knit hats for my husband, I often think "what, that's way too long!" Sometimes it is because a fold-up brim is intended, but also, the stretch and curvature eat what would appear to be some of the excess length.

As mercy_rain said, I mean a fitted beanie.. not sure of the terms you are using! :-)

It's probably accounting for a few inches of brim, so that sounds about right. Most non-brim hats I've made for dudes tend to be around 8" in length.

What size are 'regular' needles? Or do you mean straight needles?

If the guy has a hat he likes, you could ask him to measure it for you. :)
