First were the needles; the pattern calls for a smaller size (US3) and a larger size (US4). I wasn't getting gauge with the 4's, so I increased to US5's and got perfect gauge. The pattern is written to knit the from and back flat and then to seam them together, however I decided to knit the whole thing in the round and seam as minimally as possible. It is knit from the bottom up, so when I reached the arm holes, I knit ended up doing that short bit flat. I also knit the sleeves in the round instead of flat. While knitting, I was a little excited and misread the pattern at the arm holes; I read that they were supposed to be 6", when they were really supposed to be 6.5". I was prepared to frog, but when I tried on the sweater it fit, so I left it.
What I Learned:
Everything. I learned what it is like to construct a sweater. I learned that sleeves in 1x1 ribbing can become painful. Although I know how to crochet (minimally), I have never had to read crochet directions before, so that was a new experience. I learned what I like and don't like about this sweater and what I can do to improve sweaters I knit in the future. I also found out that I do not have a tapestry needle that is small enough to fit through the hole in the button and at the same time be big enough to thread the yarn I used. Compromise: regular sewing needle with thread.
This was so much fun and I am contemplating knitting another one. I think the only thing I would have changed aside from the changes I did make would be to add another 2 or 3 inches to the bottom.
