I am attempting to knit a nice Hogwarts scarf with Ravenclaw colors. quackkwak made the suggestion of knitpick's merino style. I was wondering how I would end up estimating how many balls of yarn I would need to purchase? Is there a way to estimate it with the gauge? Is there a website someone could point me to? Or a suggestion someone can make? I am a very neurotic person and if I buy yarn and end up with a huge amount left over or end up stalled in the middle because I have to order more my brain might implode. I'm wondering if it would just be easier to order a skein of the yarn and experiment with it?

I already posted this over at my knitting journal, illadore but I figured I'd show it off here as well. :)

This is straight out of "Just Hats" and is the "Manly Slip-Stitch Hat". I did it in Red, White, and Blue entirely because that was the color of leftover yarn I had in Lamb's Pride Bulky.

FO Hat!Collapse )

It was pretty easy to knit up. Yet another hat in my repertoire for when I need to knit a quick gift!

I'm about to take on designing my first pattern and I wanted to do a cardigan. I was wondering if there are any books out there that just focus on how to design? Like common design elements, how to do different types of shoulders, sleeves, collars, et cetera. What certain increases and decreases look like, and maybe even going over different cast-ons and cast-offs. Just a very in-depth manual about everything you would ever need to know when designing your own garment. Oh also, how to resize your garment. I hope something like that exists!

It would be super great if it was available on Amazon so I could order it and get it super quick.

TIA!

So I posted in my normal blog, http:///www.thefatgirlblog.com, about my making dishcloths. Someone posted a comment and wanted to buy some, but I have no idea what to charge. I'll come up with my own pattern, so no copyright issues, but have any of you sold some and what did you charge?

I've just had my first foray into KoolAid dyeing. I really like it, but I'm feeling a little limited in my colour options. I'm curious if anyone has done any experiments with combining flavours of KoolAid to produce new colours? I'm trying to produce some sort of attractive brown and if no one has done (and documented!) this kind of thing before, then I'll just have to experiment myself. If someone has done it then I'd love to benefit from their experience. I've googled, but perhaps I'm just not using the right terms.

My first posted FO, not because I don't finish things (okay, that might be true), but because I just got a camera.

This is my finished clapotis. I used Knitpicks Shine Worsted in Ebony, and I used about 8 balls and some. It's really gorgeous yarn, it's my new fave!

PicturesCollapse )

If I were to do it again, I would use a thinner yarn, but I might die of the tedium. Also, when I was doing it I kept worrying about it being too short, which ended up being the least of my worries.

Has anyone had recent dealings with yarnware.com? I placed my first order there and they sent me the wrong set of needles, and I'm wondering if this return process is going to be a pain in the butt. I'm really hoping this isn't one of those unpleasant companies who expect you to pay to ship back their blatant screw up (they didn't even match their own packing list).

(Also, God help me, I'm miffed. I really needed to finish this birthday gift this weekend if at all humanly possible, and now I don't have the size DPNs I need. Grr.)

I'm working on the OSW and I'm at row 9 and I've screwed up my increases somewhere. I've got 21 stitches on one end before the stitch marker and 26 on the other end after the other stitch marker. I don't know how I did this, I guess I knit a couple stitches that weren't actually stitches.

Do I have to frog or can anyone offer a solution that doesn't require ripping out mohair?

Thank you!

My first successful pair of socks! (That is, they are structurally sound but not flawless. After four frogged attempts, I'm pretty pleased with myself!)

Pattern: Priscilla's Dream Socks from Interweave Knits Fall 2000 (also available on the website)

Yarn: Handdyed Cascade 220 bought on etsy.com

Knit on size 3 needles, guage was 5 stitches per inch

These are amazingly comfortable socks. The heel and toes are both made using short rows, and the pattern is adjusted slightly for left and right foot. The pattern also has a chart which makes it easy to adjust the pattern for sock/foot size and whatever guage you have with your needles and yarn.

I had problems with the zigzag bind-off the pattern specified, so I used kitchener stitch on the second sock.
