I  have been told by a third party that the sweater I have started knitting for my boyfriend is "disgusting".

Hello, Knitters!

I've been knitting for about three weeks, and in that time, I've made three scarves, a shawl and a headband.  And now I'd like to have a go at a hat.

Here's what I'm planning to knit

Any advice or words of encouragement before I start?! :)

(love seeing all of your pictures, btw)

I would like to make Ella from Knitty, I just found some great yarn for it. However, I have a pattern question.

Between Section 3 and Section 4 it says "Proceed to Section 4, working from Row 2."

Why work from Row 2? Why even have a Row 1 if it's not going to be used? I don't get it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

So, I'm thinking of trying this (laminaria shawl from knitty), but here's the problem: I cannot figure out how you're supposed to start this? I get that you're supposed to do some crocheting and my friend has agreed to do that, but other than that I'm super lost on how this thing gets started.

Now I normally would tell people that if they're lost from the very beginning that they should just not start it, but even though I haven't been knitting for a long time, I've been doing some pretty challenging things, I guess. This was essentially my first project that I started about 2 or 3 weeks after learning how to knit and purl. So yeah, I really really really want to give the shawl a try (especially since I have some beautiful yarn just begging me to knit it into a pretty shawl) but I'm just so confused by how to get started.

Can anyone offer any clarifications? Or can someone link me to someone on ravelry who could offer clarifications? Thanks! :)

Edit: Thanks so much for your input, guys! I tried the cast-on and it wasn't quite as difficult as I thought it would be. Collecting the 7 stitches along the edge of the work is a bit awkward though. But yeah, it works... but what doesn't work for me is the difficulty of the pattern! I may try it again when I'm able to devote 100% of my attention to it, but at the moment it's too tough!

I love these. Quick, fun knit. I improvised the pattern (first time) and also dyed the yarn (yay for Kool-aid.)

Here are the gauge swatches for the MS4 stole. Love how it is turning out already. The one on the left is on larger needles with less repeats. I really think I like it better than the smaller needles, which surprises me. The colors aren't quite true, but I will add a pic of the beads and yarn by themselves. On with the pictures!
