KnitPicks Yarn Review

So after eagerly waiting for my Andean Silk from KnitPicks.com, it arrived today while I was out running errands.

At first I thought the box was empty, it was so amazingly light. But when I opened it up, oh, the treasure inside!

Eight skeins of Andean Silk in the Lettuce colour. 55% superfine alpaca, 23% silk, 22% merino. It's absolutely silky-soft to touch, and the colour is almost perfectly matched to the website. I think there's a hint more brown which makes it less kelly-green, but it's still a very lovely colour.

My webcam really doesn't do the colour justice, but I tried.

I haven't knit any up yet, but the gauge on the label is 4.5-5 stitches per inch on US7/8. Personally, that seems almost a little big, but then again I'm a terrible judge of gauge.

Speaking of the label, I noticed something when I took it out of the packaging. The label says 50 grams/96 yards, but the website claims that the yardage is 110 yards per skein! I bought 8 skeins to make Cozy for my Oma, and thought I'd have more than enough to make it, but now it looks as if I'm 14 yards short per skein. 14 times 8 - that's over a full skein I'm technically 'short', since I bought it with the assumption I'd have plenty left over for a generous swatch to play with. Now I don't.

I'm really upset by this because I'm a university student and buying this yarn was my last real splurge on the stuff - and now I'm short and can't really afford to buy another skein and ship it to Canada.

I think I'll write a letter to bring it to the attention of whoever runs KnitPicks, but I'm not sure who to get in contact with. I'm open to suggestions.

EDIT 4.23 pm EST: Wow! I gave KnitPicks a call and explained to them the problem. The woman was very kind and noted that yes, the actual yardage for Andean Silk is 96 yards, not the 110 advertised on the site and they'd caught it a bit late and they were changing/changed their website to reflect it. (I checked the website, it still lists 110 yards/skein for me. Maybe it's just me?) I said that I'd ordered based on the 110 yards, and now I was about 100 yards short on my project. The lady said 'okay, well, we made a mistake and I'm really sorry, so we'll send you two (!) skeins free of charge'.

That was so sweet! I mean, one skein I could have seen, but two! I'll definitely order from them again simply on the basis of their customer service.
