I'm a bit confused over how to make sure I buy the correct wool and needles. My pattern specifies sizes 4½ mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles or size
needed to obtain gauge, and my gauge is 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

I don't want to use the wool they've suggested (Bernat denimstyle (3.5 oz / 100 g), as I have a particular color scheme in mind. So my question is, how do I go about selecting the right type of wool? Or is it based on trial and error?

This is the pattern: http://www.bernat.com/data/pattern/pdf/instruction_216.en_US.pdf (sorry I keep posting about the same sweater!) Can you suggest a wool to use? Or should I just buy a wool I like a bunch of needles?

Thanks!
