Somebody who works at my yarn store came up to me and asked me if I could reverse-engineer an item that they have on display at the store. They've long since forgotten what book or magazine the pattern is from, but customers frequently ask about it and the store wants to offer the pattern free with the purchase of that yarn.

Given that I have never seen the pattern before and am 100% using my own words and opinions on how these are constructed, is it legal (in the United States) for me to write up a pattern for them and offer that for free distribution at the store?

(As a further question, is it legal for me to offer it for sale? Morally I wouldn't because it's not my work and I don't want to cash in on someone else's idea, but hypothetically?)

Thank you very much!
